  1. Eliminate Distractions. Silence your cell phone (or don’t even bring it with you) so you can give the customer your full attention.
  2. Focus on what’s being said – not what you’re going to say next.
  3. Ask open-ended questions like, “Why?” or “Could you explain more?”
  4. Don’t just listen, watch for nonverbal cues and use your own (such as nodding) to encourage the customer.
  5. Paraphrase what you’ve heard back to the customer to make sure your interpretation is on track.
